Mike West

Mike was born in Margate Kent and started playing the Cornet aged six but soon changed to Euphonium and Trombone where he achieved Grade 8 with distinction by the age of 14 and was a member of the County Wind Orchestra. He then promptly gave up Euphonium and concentrated on Trombone, quickly establishing himself as first call for many orchestral, Big Band and Brass Band Ensembles. He was a founder member of the 10 piece group Simply Versatile and played for Brass Bands where he won Soloist awards along with having the honour of playing under Walter Hargreaves. He was a member of the Canterbury based group that won the Jazz Group of the Year in 1993 and was offered a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. At 18 Mike was coerced into giving up his beloved Trombone to pursue a career as a commercial Trumpet player.

Mike has enjoyed a very successful career on trumpet for the past 18 years where he has studied under many people including Brian Rankin (BBC Big Band) and Dale Gibson (Sid Lawrence Orchestra) and has played for some of the UK’s most prestigious big bands along with Off Broadway shows, touring shows and many recordings. During his career he has played venues such as The Royal Albert Hall London, The Festival Hall London, The Queen Elizabeth Hall London and The Royal Opera House London.

Mike has now taken advantage of an opportunity and has returned to Trombone. He has also returned to Brass Band playing where he is now playing for Aveley and Newham Band in Essex and has been playing under the baton of Nigel Taken, Ian Mcelligott, Melvin White and Frank Renton. He is the founder member of Kent Brass.
